New FAQ: How Do I ‘Block’ An Unwanted Follower?

utterli-image

Blocking an unwanted follower is easy: simply select the user you would like to block, click through to their ‘full profile’ (http://utterli.com/USERNAME/profile) and click ‘block this user’. Additionally, you can view only your utters and those of the people you’re following by viewing the ‘recent’ timeline rather than the ‘all’ timeline.

Utterli Changed: ‘Follow All’ Has Been Removed

utterli-image

With the continued growth of our community has come the adoption of our service by unsavory opportunists looking to exploit our feature offerings for the purpose of spam. As a result of this, we’ll remain open-minded with regard to our existing business rules – to this end, we’d like to inform the entire Utterli community that we’ve removed the “Follow All” option, meaning you are no longer able to follow another user’s contacts en masse and will have to follow other users on an individual basis.

Moving forward, we’ll also be editing the business rule with regard to messaging other users: you will only be able to message users that are following you; our community has voiced its collective opinion and we’ve determined user-to-user messaging should only occur when the desire for is mutual. We hope this will also limit the options for spam artists.

As always, please send all feature requests, feedback, and suggestions to feedback [AT] utterli [DOT] com.

utterli-image
Q: How do I download my utters as audio files?

A: You can download your utters as mp3 audio files through the RSS for an Utterli timeline or your individual utter, though accomplishing this will differ slightly depending on what type of web browser you are using. To download your utters as audio files, simply click the RSS icon visible either in the URL window or above the title of your individual discussion. Once you’ve clicked the RSS icons and have found the appropriate utter, just right-click to save the file to your desktop. For more detail, including screenshots, read this blog post.

Q: How long is the delay for receiving email or SMS notifications?

A: Like the 10-minute delay for cross-posting your utters, there is also a 10-minute delay between the time you post an utter and your followers receive either an email or SMS notification.

Share Your Election Day Experiences to ABC News Election Group

Today is an important day. After two years of almost non-stop campaigning and corresponding media coverage, the American democratic process will be put to the test.

News media has traditionally been considered the “fourth estate” - an unofficial branch of government that serves to both monitor the representatives of the people, as well as inform the electorate. Tonight, ABC News Radio will provide live, on-air coverage on affiliate stations the stretch from coast to coast. The internet, similarly and universally deployed coast to coast, will play an important role in our coverage.

Inherently, all media is social. In the last four years, we’ve seen tremendous advances in web-based technology. Radio and web based ’social’ media have a lot in common. Both mediums are platforms that fascilitate connectivity, discussion, and information sharing. ABC News Radio is doing our part to bring “new,” so-called Social Media to a more mainstream radio audience, and vice versa. You can find the early stages - including podcasts, live video, and campaign updates - of our web development at http://abcnewsradio.com

As we continue to develop our web presence, we’re excited to work with Utterli to bring web audio to the radio. Through the night, we’ll incorporate audio messages on Utterli into our live radio coverage. Additionally, we’ll encourage our audience to to use Utterli and platforms like it to share their election day experiences. To share your opinion and experiences, all you need to do is join the ABC News Radio Utterli group http://www.utterli.com/ABCNewsElectionGroup

Thanks much, and have a great election day.

McCain-Palin vs. Obama-Biden: Vote Now for the Next Utterli-in-Chief

One of our most high-level goals with Utterli is to marry the mobile phone and social web - facilitating the creation, connection and sharing of news, updates, and opinions - so, naturally, in an election year, politics has been at the forefront of our growing community.

In the spirit of democracy, we’d like to get utterli political by running a poll from now until Midnight on Election Day (Tuesday, November 4th) to determine who our community thinks should be the next president.

We’re going to keep it simple and offer three choices: McCain-Palin and Obama-Biden, or Other (vote in the right sidebar):

New on Utterli: Utterli Free Group Texting and Utterli Desktop App 1.0

Good afternoon,

We have two product releases for you today. Both of these products help you to create and share group discussions with colleagues, friends, and people with similar interests.

Release #1: Utterli Free Group Texting

ufgt

This new app lets you send text messages to your friends (one or many) in Facebook, Bebo, and Utterli. This is the first app to bridge your friend connections on all three networks. Recipients of your text messages can receive and respond from within their social network interface or on their mobile phone. From the phone, standard mobile texting charges apply, but there are no charges for texts handled within Bebo and Facebook – which is great if you have a limited texting plan or can’t reach your Bebo friends in the UK, Ireland and elsewhere. And, to celebrate the launch of this app, we’ve created a contest rewarding people that send the most texts in a given month. The reward is an iPod Touch. Give this app a try (on Bebo here), it’s simple, it’s global, it’s economical, and it’s fun.

Special note for app developers and Utterli “evangelistas”: you might care to know that Utterli Free Group Texting is based on our Utterli GroupMMS platform, the underlying web + voice platform that fuels multimedia publishing and group messaging at Utterli.com.

Release #2: Utterli Desktop Application 1.0 available now
Today we released version 1.0 of our Utterli Desktop application, an update to our beta AIR app that includes several key new capabilities – multimedia utter creation from the desktop app and integration of your contacts and groups lists for easier sharing of utters.

We really want to thank Paisano and the Utterli Ambassadors for reviewing and testing a limited beta release earlier this month. The feedback from these community members, especially on the utter creation GUI and presentation of contacts and groups. These inputs were critical to improving this app quickly. On behalf of the entire team here, I just want to thank you all for your tireless support and vocal feedback.

And, while we’re sharing news, I can’t pass up the opportunity to drop a hint here: Our previous beta release of the Utterli Air App, which is really focuses on passive viewing, listening and reading, was initially developed for a consumer electronics partner. This is why it was developed with restricted production capabilities. Stay tuned for more news on that later☺

Thanks for your time today. As always, we welcome your feedback. And, we hope you enjoy these two releases!

New Changes to the Utterli Site

There are a few small changes to the site you’ve probably already noticed.

Timeline Sort - rather than four different choices (Popular/Popular with Replies Hidden; All/All with Replies Hidden), we’ve greatly simplified the choices:

timeline sort

Follow/MSG - in addition to changing the font to orange to better highlight theses options, rather than just Follow/Following, we’ve made sending private messages far easier by instead presenting this option:

follow/mssg

And, back by popular demand is Views (visible in the top, right corner of the above image). As many of you may remember we used to have a Listens count for each individual utter, this differs because rather than solely count the quantity of listens, we’re now simply counting page views. Since it is bound to come up, Views are counted strictly by the number of page views, so if you’ve created a private utter and it has 7 Views, it DOES NOT mean that you and six other people have viewed it.
